Since June 2019, Glass Services has offered calibrations for vehicles with ADAS camera systems. ADAS systems are a safety standard; at least 1 ADAS feature has been available on over 92% of new vehicle models since 2018. Anytime the windshield is replaced or the camera is otherwise disturbed, the camera system is required to be calibrated.
What is ADAS?
ADAS stands for “Advanced Driver(s) Assistance Systems” and are designed for vehicle and driver safety. These systems rely upon cameras, lasers, and radar – often with the camera mounting to the windshield. Any time a new windshield is installed, the camera must be calibrated to ensure proper functionality and to restore the camera to OEM specifications.
Examples of ADAS applications are:
Glass Services’ trained and certified technicians can perform the windshield replacement and recalibration in one appointment meaning you can avoid a trip to the dealership.
Does insurance pay for the calibration?
We can bill your insurance for the recalibration making us not only one stop but one bill with very little out of pocket expense.
What can happen if the camera is not calibrated?
If a vehicle’s ADAS is not properly calibrated, the system may not function safely. If the cameras/radars/lasers on the vehicle are off by even a few millimeters they may not give accurate readings and the system may not function properly. A misaligned camera could jeopardize the functionality of the system and lead to dangerous driving or accidents, so it is crucial that the cameras are aligned perfectly, which is what the calibration ensures. Many cars now steer the vehicle to keep it safely in the lane, a misaligned camera can cause the car to drive into the wrong lane.
How long does it take?
Depending on the type of calibration that your vehicle needs, we ask to have your vehicle for on average 4-6 hours for the windshield replacement and calibration of the camera.
